The island has two distinct characters – historic and contemporary, the former centred on the village of the same name, the latter focused on the new ritzy resorts with their giant casinos, mixed dining options, world class daily and evening entertainment and shops upon designer shops. Taipa Village is renowned for its tiny stores, restaurants and row of lime-green painted villas which were built by wealthy Macanese families in the 1920s and today house the Taipa House Museum.
